What is Asset or Equipment Finance

Asset finance is a type of business funding which is used to purchase or refinance the assets of a business. Acceptable assets can be classed as ‘hard’ or ‘soft’.

If you’re looking to invest in your business, for example, the purchase of new equipment, asset finance can help to release the money you need. Asset financing can be used for two purposes:

  • Raising capital against existing assets
  • Funding to purchase new assets

Hard assets

Hard assets is the name given to equipment with an easily defined value. Hard Assets act as reliable security for finance companies because they provide a significant amount of security in their sizable and continuing value even at the end of their usable life. In particular hard assets that are revenue producing can retain significant value for long periods (i.e. manufacturing equipment).

Some examples of hard assets are:-

  • Agricultural and forestry equipment (tractors, ploughs etc)
  • Aircraft
  • Boats
  • Buses and coaches
  • Cars, vans and commercial vehicles
  • CNC controls for machine lines
  • Construction plant (cranes etc)
  • Construction vehicles
  • Engineering equipment
  • Haulage vehicles
  • Light goods vehicles
  • Manufacturing equipment
  • Mining equipment
  • Printing presses, guillotines and finishing equipment
  • Production and plant equipment
  • Recycling processors

Soft Assets

Soft assets - Soft assets are assets with little or no second-hand value when they come to the end of their usable life (the end of the leasing period).

Some examples of soft assets are :-

  • Air conditioning systems
  • Audio Visual and IT hardware and electronics
  • Catering equipment
  • Commercial kitchens
  • Electronic point of sale (EPOS) systems
  • Factory equipment
  • Gym equipment
  • Hotel furniture
  • IT hardware (computers etc)
  • IT Software packages
  • Medical devices
  • Office furniture & equipment
  • Security systems (including CCTV)

Types Of Asset Finance

There are 4 types of asset finance :-

Hire Purchase

Hire Purchase (or lease purchase) allows you to spread the cost of your asset over a longer period. Repayments are regular, and you have the option of buying the item at the end of the agreement.

Hire purchase can be beneficial to a business as it negates the need to pay out a lump sum for the purchase of an item. In addition, these agreements tend to benefit from fixed monthly repayments. This can make forecasting financials much more straightforward.

During the contract, you are generally responsible for maintenance costs for the asset. The likely costs of maintenance should be considered on top of the monthly repayments.

Finance Lease

A finance lease is designed to give business owners the option of borrowing an asset for the majority of its predicted life, rather than purchasing it outright. This can be beneficial to cash flow because new equipment does not have to be paid for upfront.

Since it is rented rather than bought, it never appears on your balance sheet and the rental payments can be offset against profit and VAT.

Operating Lease

An operating lease, also known as contract hire, is the most well-known form of leasing. In simple terms, an operating lease is a rental agreement for an item, for a pre-agreed term.

Asset Refinance

Asset refinance is used to release capital from assets back into the business and is designed to aid cash flow. This allows a business owner to sell their asset to the provider before leasing it back on agreed monthly payments, it is ideal for use with hard assets.

The capital released not only provides a boost to the bank balance, but the company still benefit from the use of the asset.

Bad Credit Asset Finance

If you or your business has previously suffered adverse credit, many lenders will be unwilling to lend to you. Although this can seem like a dead end, there are a number of lenders who are happy to help which can be accessed by brokers who can usually arrange funding quickly.

The strength of the asset will play a large role in deciding the rate offered, hard assets with a long life span will be favoured by lenders to get a decent rate.

The full criteria for funding asset finance applications can vary between lenders. Although each lender will have their own individual preferences, this is designed to give you an overview of the applications which can be funded.

If your application does not fit the criteria laid out here, please speak to one of our advisors  and they will be able to look for a bespoke funding package for you.
